Harlingen Havenstad

Harlingen - Impressies van de Westfriese havenstad aan de Nederlandse kust.


Sinds Pinksteren 1966 kennen we deze knusse plek met de geheel intacte, historische binnenstad in Hollandse stijl, die de kustlijn aan de Waddeenzee net ten zuiden van de sluitdijk van het IJsselmeer definieert.

Toegegeven, onze eerste kennismaking met Harlingen was gebaseerd op het feit dat we onze droomboot naar het vakantie-eiland Terschelling hebben gemist vanwege een onjuist ingeschatte reistijd vanaf Bremen.

De wachttijd tot het volgende vertrek hebben we doorstaan ​​in een van de typische, gezellige havencafés met Pilsje en Jenever, de liefde voor Harlingen was geboren.

In de jaren daarna verbleven we - en dat doen we nu nog steeds - altijd voor één nacht in een van de kleine hotels aan een van de grachten bij de Noorderhaven. Bijzonder aan te bevelen is hotel 'Anna Casparii', centraal gelegen aan de Radhuissteeg.

Het romantische en maritieme Harlingen - voor ons was het liefde op het eerste gezicht!

Harlingen, of Harns in het Westfries, werd in de 12e eeuw gesticht door monniken toen twee terpen werden gedempt en grachten werden aangelegd, en in 1234 kreeg het stadsrechten.

In het oude stadscentrum van Harlingen met zijn havens, grachten en steegjes is er niets wezenlijk veranderd sinds ons eerste bezoek bijna veertig jaar geleden, afgezien van noodzakelijke restauraties aan de 600 historische gebouwen.

Dat is absoluut positief te zien in onze snel evoluerende tijden van vandaag. Met Harlingen, de vierde stad van Friesland, is hier aan de Westfriese kust de gezellige charme van de afgelopen Nederlandse hoogtijdagen goed bewaard gebleven!

Weg van de pittoreske oude binnenstad met zijn historische gebouwen en karakteristieke trapgevels, hebben de levendige haven-, visserij- en scheepsbouwindustrie, vooral in de jachtbouw, een enorme bloei doorgemaakt in de 15.000 inwoners tellende stad.

Ook het toegenomen ferryverkeer naar de West-Friese vakantie-eilanden Vlieland en Terschelling voor de kust en de visserij zijn sterke pijlers van de economie van Harlingen, die vooral gebaseerd is op de christelijke zeevaart.

Daarnaast wordt de 'skyline van de oude binnenstad van Harlingen' aan het water gedomineerd door het doolhof van masten van de vele traditionele klippers en platbodemzeilers, voor wie Harlingen zowel thuishaven als springplank is naar het heerlijke vaargebied in de Waddenzee en naar de havens van de Waddeneilanden.

Lang leve de maritieme romantiek in Harlingen met als hoogtepunt de jaarlijkse regatta van traditionele zeilers, de 'Brandaris Race' van Harlingen naar Terschelling.
